If you are to make a list of popular cosmetic procedures that people undergo today, then it will definitely include the very popular rhinoplasty. It is more commonly referred to as a nose job because basically it aims to change how a person’s nose will look like. This is because a lot of people are longing to have a perfect nose that would look really pretty on their face. But there are some questions revolving around it. Do you actually get to remove the entire nose then you just stitch it back afterwards? Funny right? But Rhinoplasty involves processes that are a lot simpler than you actually think. So read on and find out how exactly this cosmetic surgery is done.
Anesthesia is administered.
The first thing that’s being done when undergoing a nose job is that anesthesia is injected on the patient. Usually it involves intravenous (IV) sedation or just a general anesthesia, depending on the choice of your surgeon. This is done to make sure that you won’t feel any pain while the doctor operates on your nose.
Incisions are made.
Next, incisions are made on your nose. It is good to know that rhinoplasty procedure is closed, meaning, the incisions are done inside the nose that’s why there would be no visible scars after the procedure. However, there are some instance wherein exterior incisions are made especially when the size and shape of the nostrils or the nasal tip have to be modified.
The cartilage and bone are remodeled.
After making the incision, the surgeon will then remodel your nose cartilage and bone particularly if you wish to narrow down your nose’s bridge. This is usually done using a hammer and chisel type of instrument. There are also instances wherein the nose is just planed down if you only wish to remove a distracting hump on your nose. But there are some cases wherein the bone is not to be altered at all. Instead, cartilage pieces are just removed or rearranged.
Excess skin is removed.
The next thing to do is to remove the excess skin. Most of the time, this is done when the nostrils are to be narrowed or when you want to shorten you long nasal tip.
Incisions are closed and bandaged.
Lastly, incisions are closed and bandaged using sutures as well as placing gauze packing, exterior dressings or even a splint on the nose. This is important to do to be able to protect the nose from any possible infection. Doing this can also speed up the healing process as well as control swelling.
